We have a portion of Scripture held dearly by most churches, at least in words.
Jesus left this last command: “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15). Matthew writes, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (28:19a).
Who is Called to the Mission?
The mistake of many Christians is believing they are not called to be more than followers of Christ. Many Christians live like they are not worthy to preach or teach others about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Somewhere in the course of time we have raised the calling of preaching, teaching, and witnessing to those who are pastors, teachers, preachers, and missionaries.
Jesus is calling all of his followers to the mission. His words of commission are for every believer. You are called by Jesus to help in the mission of telling others about Him and the hope that he as brought to all humanity.
What is the Mission we are all called to?
The mission is singular, but it flows out and evidenced in some particular ways. The mission is proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus and making disciples or followers of Christ. The evidence as these Scriptures show is in baptism and growing through the teaching Jesus left.
“19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
Isn’t it amazing how we humans like to complicate God’s plans? I mean he gave ten commandments in the Old Testament that ended up to over six hundred by the time Jesus came on the scene. Many people complicate the calling of every Christian by mystifying what it is to witness and share the Gospel. We’ve complicated discipleship into programs within churches.
The reality is Jesus says, “Go tell others about me, and teach them how to follow my ways.”
The Great Commission isn’t complicated. We just need to speak the truth of hope and what Christ has done for us. Then as people open up we teach them to read and understand his word and to show evidence through baptism.
So what’s stopping you from fulfilling the Great Commission in your life today?
Blessings on the journey,
Dan Shipton
